The band was formed in Buenos Aires, January 1994. Initial interests: funk rhythms, improvisation, jazz changes, abstraction and rock textures. They began working on the member's compositions and also to jam.
Influences are diverse including Bill Laswell, Miles Davis, John Zorn, Astor Piazzolla, George Clinton and Gyorgy Ligeti among others. Annually the band makes 8/10 concerts, appearing in clubs, discos, art galleries and other venues. During live performances, different combinations of instruments are presented as some duos or trios take place.
In 1995 the band started giving improvisation a more important space in live concerts, and began giging with several rotating collaborators. In addition, different improvisation tactics were tried, including improvisation over chord changes, without any chord, conducted improvisation, conducted with cards, improvisation with pre defined cues, and of course absolutely free flight.
In July 1996 the first CD was released. Produced by Capitanes, it features the band´s production between January '94 and February '95 (both compositions and free jams).
In April 1997, Capitanes played in "Experimenta '97", an international new music festival sponsored by the Buenos Aires University and City Gov. For this concert, a special guest was added: Shelley Hirsch. In the same festival, the band also participated in the performance of Larry Polansky and Chris Mann. Members and collaborators of the band appeared in various other musicians' presentations including David Moss, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Livio Tragtenberg and Wilson Sukorski.
